Now that we’ve seen how to deploy applications and desktops using PVS, let’s take a look at how MCS (Machine Creation Services) works.

Prerequisites

  1. Golden Image + Snapshot
  2. Citrix VDA deployed
  3. Citrix Receiver (Optional)

Creating Machine Catalog

Navigate to Studio -> Machine Catalogs -> Create Machine Catalog

CTX_MCS_01
Click Next on the Introduction page

CTX_MCS_02
Select the Operating System of your choice, for this particular post, I selected Windows Server OS as we’ll be deploying Windows Server 2012 R2 in the lab

CTX_MCS_03
On the Machine Management page, we’re going to select Machines that are power managed and under Deploy Machines Using settings, we’re going to chose Citrix Machine Creation Services (MCS)

CTX_MCS_04
Remember how we had to create a virtual machine snapshot? Well this is the part where we put that snapshot to use. So, let’s select the virtual machine that we’re going to use as our Golden Image, expand the virtual machine and select the snapshot

CTX_MCS_05
We now need to size our future virtual machines as well as the total number of virtual machines that will be needed for this machine catalog

CTX_MCS_06
When new virtual machines are created, we need to ensure that basic configuration like joining the virtual machine to Active Directory works correctly, so in this section, we’re going to use the option of Create new Active Directory accounts (computer objects) and we’re also going to specify the location (OU) of where we want to keep these virtual machines in AD. Another important part to define is the Account naming scheme

CTX_MCS_07
Provide the Machine Catalog name and the Description

CTX_MCS_08
Once you’ve confirmed the settings, click on Finish to provision our Machine Catalog

CTX_MCS_09
Once the provisioning is complete, you should see the new virtual machine in the VMware vSphere environment, as well as the new Machine Catalog

CTX_MCS_11
The last thing we need to do is create the Delivery Group
