Today, I’ve heard the news about a new fling “the HTML5 vCenter web client” that was just released. The new Web Client has been written with HTML5 and Javascript and from my testing so far, it seems to be quite responsive, with a lot of opportunity to become the main client that hopefully some day, vCenter will include.
For the past 6 or so months, I’ve shifted my focus more towards the web client and I’ve been using the .Net client a lot less. In fact, I feel like I know my way around the web client better these days. So when I’ve heard about this new fling, I had to try it. In my personal experience, the installation is pretty straight forward, nothing complicated and for me, it ran on first attempt, although I am using the Windows version of vCenter.
As you can see from the image above, the interface has changed, it feels more refined, cleaner, easier to read and less clutter. Unfortunately, in this first technical preview, a lot of the options are currently not available, and of course, this is expected as this is the first release. Remember the HTML 5 web client for ESXi? How it started out and how well it turned out? I am hoping the same for this fling.
Here’s a list of everything that’s included in this technical preview (of course all the details are available on the main site linked below).
- VM Power Operations (common cases)
- VM Edit Settings (simple CPU, Memory, Disk changes)
- VM Console
- VM and Host Summary pages
- VM Migration (only to a Host)
- Clone to Template/VM
- Create VM on a Host (limited)
- Additional monitoring views (Performance charts, Tasks, Events)
- Global Views (Recent tasks, Alarms–view only)
